- Dans L'imagination (1936), Sartre avait mené une analyse critique des théories de l'image mentale depuis Descartes. L'imaginaire, qu'il écrivit à la suite, tente d'abord ce qu'il appelle une phénoménologie de l'image, c'est-à-dire qu'il inventorie et conceptualise tout ce qu'une réflexion directe, voire subjective, peut apprendre de certain sur la conscience imageante ; il écarte donc les théories de ses prédécesseurs tout en se servant, souvent contre eux, de leurs observations concrètes, aussi bine que de sa propre subjectivité. Puis il en vit au probable, à savoir à ses premières hypothèses sur la nature de l'image mentale, ce qui l'amène à se poser des questions qui débordent la psychologie phénoménologique : Cette possibilité qu'a la conscience de se donner un objet absent est-elle contingente ? Quel est son rapport avec la pensée ? avec le symbole ? Que représente l'imaginaire dans la vie de la conscience, dans notre position du réel ? Et enfin quelle est la réalité de l'œuvre d'art, cet irréel ?
