Kapital'in 1867 yılında basılan birinci cildinde çok sayıda gönderme yapılan bu kitap, Alman felsefesine yönelik eleştiriler de içeriyor. Birinci baskısı Fransızca olarak 1847 yılında çıkan Felsefenin Sefaleti'nin ilk Almanca çevirisi, yazarının ölümünden sonra, 1885 yılında yayımlandı. Bu baskının editörlüğünü üstlenen Friedrich Engels, çeviriyi gözden geçirdi, Marx'tan kalan notlardan hareketle düzeltmeler yaptı, dipnotlar ekledi, bir önsöz yazdı ve kitabı bazı ek metinlerle zenginleştirdi. Engels, 1891 yılında, kitabın İspanyolca çevirisinin basılması için izin istendiğinde şu cevabı verdi: Hiç kuşkusuz, bu girişimi sevinçle onaylıyoruz.
