- Fully annotated edition featuring 187 scholarly footnotes by translator Samuel Butler — illuminating mythology, geography, and the ancient Greek world on every pageOriginal black-and-white engravings for all 24 Books — bringing Homer's epic world to life with stunning period-appropriate illustrationComprehensive Cast of Characters with pronunciation guides — introducing every god, hero, monster, and mortal before the story beginsExtensive Introduction covering Homer, the Homeric Question, the world of ancient Greece, and the poem's enduring legacyGlossary of Greek Names and Terms, Guide to the Gods of the Odyssey, complete Timeline of Events, and Further Reading sectionButler's own Prefaces to the First and Second Editions — included in full as part of this scholarly annotated textProfessionally formatted for an immersive reading experience in both print and Kindle editionsOne of the greatest stories ever told — now in a richly annotated and illustrated edition. After ten years fighting at Troy, Odysseus begins the long voyage home to Ithaca. But the gods have other plans. Shipwrecked, enchanted, and driven to the very edges of the known world, he must outwit monsters, resist temptresses, and navigate the treacherous desires of gods and men — sustained only by his cunning, his courage, and his longing for home.Written nearly three thousand years ago, Homer's Odyssey remains one of the most gripping narratives in all of literature. It is the story of a man who has seen wonders beyond imagining and suffered more than most mortals could bear — and who keeps going anyway. Its themes of homecoming, loyalty, identity, and the relationship between cleverness and brute strength are as alive today as they were in ancient Greece. This carefully prepared annotated and illustrated edition presents Samuel Butler's celebrated 1900 prose translation — chosen for its clarity, directness, and remarkable readability — alongside a substantial body of original editorial material designed to make Homer's world fully accessible to the modern reader. What makes this edition distinctive:Samuel Butler's translation reads with a pace and energy that serves Homer's own storytelling instincts perfectly. His 187 original footnotes — retained and lightly edited in this edition — are themselves a work of extraordinary scholarly insight, offering Butler's own penetrating observations on mythology, geography, ancient Greek culture, and the remarkable theory that the Odyssey was composed by a young Sicilian woman. These notes alone make this edition unlike any other currently available. The 24 original engravings — one for each Book of the poem — have been created specifically for this edition in the tradition of the great Victorian illustrated classics, bringing key moments of the narrative to vivid visual life. The editorial apparatus — Cast of Characters, Introduction, Glossary, Timeline, and Guide to the Gods — has been written to inform and enrich without interrupting the reading experience. Every annotation is designed to be consulted when needed and ignored when not.The ancient epic that inspired Christopher Nolan's highly praised 2026 film adaptation — now available in this landmark annotated and illustrated edition.Whether you are encountering the Odyssey for the first time or returning to it after years away, this edition will make the journey richer, deeper, and more rewarding than ever before.
