En los años siguientes a la desaparición terrenal de Jesús, proliferaron múltiples y variadas comunidades de creyentes a lo largo y ancho del Mediterráneo oriental, con enfoques, creencias, objetivos y filiaciones muy distintos entre sí. Un abigarrado mosaico de grupos como los helenistas, los judeocristianos, los gnósticos y otros tantos que hacen que, más que de cristianismo, durante estos primeros momentos se debería hablar de cristianismos. Harán falta más de doscientos años para que uno de estos grupos acabe imponiéndose sobre los demás, institucionalizando así su cristianismo como el único que pervivirá. El propósito del libro es ofrecer una visión panorámica de los primeros años de existencia del cristianismo, en la que aparecerán personajes como Pablo de Tarso o Simón Pedro, pero también otros más desconocidos como Esteban o Santiago, el hermano del Señor.
