Okuma sadece okul yıllarında öğrenilen bir etkinlik değil, yemek yeme, nefes alma gibi tüm yaşamı etkileyen bir eylemdir. Okuyabilmek günümüz insanının olmazsa olmaz özelliklerinden bir tanesidir. Birey hayatı okuyarak anlar ve anlamlandırır. Bu asırda okumayan bir bireyin ne kendisine ne de etrafındakilere faydalı olması mümkündür. Metni anlamanın iki yolu vardır:Okumak ve dinlemek. Bu iki edim doğru yapıldığı taktirde doğru anlama sağlanmış olacaktır. Bu çalışma kapsamında okuma konusu üzerinde durulacaktır. Okumada göz hareketleri, ses organları elbette önemlidir ama daha da önemlisi vurguya, tonlamaya, duraklara dikkat etmek, sözcük gruplarını tanımaktır. Çünkü okumada asıl amaç anlamaktır ve bu sayılan unsurlar da doğru anlamayı sağlayacaktır. Bir metin sesli de sessiz de okunsa sözcük gruplarına, noktalama işaretlerine, duraklara, vurguya dikkat etmeden okunduğu zaman anlaşılmayacaktır. Söyle ki; sessiz okumada bu sayılan unsurlar zihinde yanlış şekillenirse yanlış okuma yapılmış olur ve ortaya yanlış anlam çıkar. Sesli okumada da bunların yanlış seslendirilmesi yine aynı sonucu doğuracaktır. Dolayısıyla ne şekilde okunursa okunsun anlamı yakalayabilmek için doğru okumak gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada ilk olarak okuma becerisi üzerinde durulacak ve ardından da okumanın insan beyninde nasıl gerçekleştiği konusuna açıklık getirilecektir.
